‘Ghajini’ will hit the screens from October

Actor Aamir Khan, who is recovering from an injury, will soon resume shooting for Hindi remake of ‘Ghajini’.

'We hope to launch the film by October,' director A R Murugadas said.

With A R Rahman scoring music for the remake, the director, who originally planned to have just one melody number, has included another one.

Asin plays Aamir's heroine in the movie. She was part of the original too.

Aamir's blog ride with SRK comes to a halt

Did Aamir Khan with such a long innings in Bollywood think that people will not give out their opinions and the news hungry media will not react in the way they accused Aamir of crossing the limits without any provocation when he told that the dog owned by the caretakers of his house is called Sharukh and how he is feeding him biscuits and that Sharukh is licking his feet.

Aamir, how are we supposed to know whether you said that to give King Khan a hell of a time giving his response to the media or was just a way of having some fun by trying to know how the film industry and the general public will react to such a comment and whether you wrote that infamous blog with a light mind which should not be taken seriously.

So again as everyone around was expecting more juice to flow out of the controversy and a full fledged khan war in Bollywood, the whole hullabaloo have been buried down by the perfectionist himself by saying that Sharukh Khan is a dear friend and that if his comments on Shah Rukh which was put out in pure humour have hurt his fans or King Khan's fans feelings then he apologise for the comments.

Just the other day Amitabh Bachchan responding to the media cry of Big B taking on Badshah of Bollywood through his blog apologized for his remarks on the falling ratings of Shah Rukh's new Television show on Star Plus and explained what he really meant.

Because of Bollywood stars finding a new outlet for their personal viewpoints through blogs, blogging has certainly become more popular.

Apologising is surely a virtue that comes out of a mind with a good attitude and one that does not carry any sort of egos.

But it seems that in the future the B-Town stars who are interested in having their own blogs should be given lessons to vent their thoughts with a clear mindset.

Rare honor for Rahman

Acclaimed music composer A R Rahman will be presented with a life time achievement award by International Indian Film Academy (IIFA).

The award would be presented to Rahman on 6 June at a grand function to be held at Bangkok.

The award is being presented to Rahman for his immense contribution to promote Indian film music abroad and also making a mark internationally.

The function would be attended by the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan among others.

'Gandhi My Father' does the Job in Cannes

All these years Anil Kapoor didn't bother to attend the Cannes Film Festival and when he did visit the most famous film festival this year, there was a purpose behind it.

He was there as a producer of his maiden production venture 'Gandhi My Father' which although can't be termed as a blockbuster or a super hit was well received and was a bold attempt in bringing out the odd relationship of Mahtma Gandhi with his eldest son Harilal Gandhi who always thought that it is his greatest disadvantage being born as Bapu's son.

Anil Kapoor now really can be proud of his decision to follow his mind and make a film about the relatively unknown relationship of Mahatma and his son as the rights for releasing the movie in the U.S. have been bought over by the Lionsgate studio in Hollywood.

The deal was made between Eros International, the company which released the movie in India and Lionsgate studio.

The film directed by the theatre director Feroz Abbas Khan featured Darshan Zariwala as Mahtama Gandhi and Akshaye Khanna as his son Harilal Gandhi.

It was released in India in the year 2007.

The star who is often called as the ultimate survivor in Bollywood might have not expected 'Gandhi My Father' to get Lionsgate studio's attention in Cannes.

But now Anil, as your film is getting ready to face the international audience,

Lot more recognitions and unexpected appreciations can come knocking at your door once it hits the theaters in U.S.

Jannat Music Review

Jannat - An interesting album
rating:3.5/5

Pritam returns to the Bhatt camp after some great hits be it Gangster, Woh Lamhe or Awarapan. Mukesh Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt known for the subject’s explored and great music offered by their films, this time explore the world of cricket.

The Bhatt camp have their good luck charm-Emraan Hashmi taking the lead yet another time and there’s a lot riding on Jannat after the disastrous Awaarapan. Also, When you have a good lyricist such as Sayeed Quadri , you surely can expect quite a bit.

The album opens with the romantically zealous voice ok KK crooning to ‘Zara Se’ a soft rock number with a tint of Indonesian flavor. The track amplifies love and is surely going to be a favourite amongst those who have discovered love lately. The track starts off in a soft and smooth manner with well penned lines such as ‘Zara si dil mein de jagha tu’ and gradually the punch comes in the form of ‘OO OH OO’ lyrically sounding similar to the ‘Kyu Aaj Kal Neend Kam’ track from Woh Lamhe but musically completely different.

The ‘Power Ballad’ version of the track too does well and it isn’t just another remix or so. In fact, it’s an unplugged version of the track that sounds really good.

'Lambi Judai - Chaar Dinon Ka Pyaar O Rabba', the age old number synonymous with Subash Ghai’s ‘Hero’ , gets a complete face lift with Kamran Ahmed’s rendition of these lines. ‘Judai’ comes in as an original composition credited to the lead vocalist of the ’82Rockers’ band. The track highlighting the separation factor between loved ones has Richa Sharma’s voice in the background and is a sure hit number. Kamran impresses with his coarse voice and the lounge version of the track titled ‘Kilogram Mix’ too is sure to make its way to all the bollywood themed parties and clubs.

‘Judai’ also comes in as a female version with Richa Sharma doing the needful of expressing the separation of love bit. But, no doubt Kamran’s freshness of voice is what makes the male version stick to you that Richa’s rendition of the track doesn’t sound all that great.

‘Haan Tu Hain’ begins very much the cliché filmy manner but eventually drifts into the Qawali terrain. KK renders to this track and unlike the previous numbers the track isn’t a driving force for the film .The track is plainly average and the future of it depends on its picturisation and promotional element.

‘Door Na Jaa’ comes in as the king of separation numbers. The hard-rock synthesized instrumented track has been rendered by Rana Mazumdar of the ‘I’m coming home’ fame from Hatrick. The track starts off on a low note and within a minute takes a whole new route in a much higher pitch. The track draws similarity to ‘Alvida’ from Metro but is indeed more melancholic and is simply superb. The lyrics blend well with Rana’s voice to provide another rock song that talks about the alvida(goodbye) factor.

‘Jannat Jahan’ brings in yet another lead vocalist of a band. Rupam Islam of the Bengali rock band Fossils croons to this pulsating track. The lyrics have been penned by Neelesh Mishra and the track exalts greed and the power of money. The electrifying guitar and drums bring in that entire bang but the track still remains more of a background score. It’s not all that hard hitting unlike a couple of other tracks of the album. The track surely blends with the theme of the film.

With tracks like ‘Zara se’ and ‘Judai’ which are already hit numbers weeks prior to the release of the film, tracks like ‘Door Na Jaa’ which is set to become a cult in its category will surely assure that the audiences are at least drawn by the music at the box office.Pritam and Sayeed Quadri combine to provide yet another interesting piece of work which is sure to please the new buyers of the film-Percept Picture Company as well as the masses.

Tashan Music Review

Tashan - A good blend of English, Hindi and Bhojpuri
rating:3.5/5

Tashan marks the debut of Vijay Krishna Acharya aka Victor, the man behind the scripts of Dhoom. Tashan comes across as Yash Raj Films first venture of the New Year and is one of the most expected movies of the year for its mix and match casting.

The music of the film has been accredited to the hit duo of Vishal and Shekar whose last Om Shanti Om saw huge success.

The album opens with ‘Dil Haara’a rock cum folksy affair rendered by Sukwinder Singh. The lyrics have been penned by Piyush Sharma and the track has some motivating phrases. The pumping elements in the form of “oo-aah” signature and the electric guitars enhance Sukhwinder’s vocals. But, the track fails to really make it as one of those numbers that either sink into you or make you hum it and sounds quite familiar to various tracks done in the past be it from Omkara and the works. Yet the track seems to be doing well with its picturisation on Saif Ali Khan doing the rounds.

‘Chaliyya’ comes across as a gypsy turned babe raunchy number. The lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan has some really catchy phrases and lines with a Hinglish touch to it. The track gets its punch with the coarse voice of Sunidhi Chauhan bringing in the ‘Na Lada Na Lada’ lines with complete excellence. The track is sure set to be remembered particularly for the pretty visuals featuring Kareena Kapoor.

‘Dil Dance Maare’ comes in as the best track of the album with lyrics that has ensured that audiences from several parts of the country don’t miss this film. With lyrics that is a combination of English, Hindi and Bhojpuri, the track is a sure shot hit. The lyrics have been penned by Vishal Dadlani himself and the track has been rendered by Sukhwinder Singh , Sunidhi Chauhan and of course apna Bhojpuri music’s sensational voice and producer of several Bhojpuri films-Udit Narayan. He makes his presence felt in a Hindi film album after a long time.

The lyrics of the track has easy catchy phrases like ‘White white face…..dil beating fast Sasura..dil ke theatre ma advance maare’ that make it an easy to remember track and one of immense mass appeal.

‘Falak Tak’ is the only soothingly romantic track of the album. The track comes in as a break from the loud and vivacious songs of this album. The lyrics have been penned by Kausar Munir. The track has been crooned by Udit Narayan once again and to support him on the vocal front is Mahalakshmi Iyer. There seems to be similarities between this number and ‘Bol na Halke Halke’ from ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’ yet ‘Falak Tak’ comes in a very refreshing manner.

‘Tashan Mein’ comes in more as a background score rather than a full fledged title track. The repeat value of the lines ‘Tashan Mein’ is what gives it a feel suitable to being a pulsating background track. The voices of Vishal and Saleem enhanced by lyrics penned by Piyush Mishra and Vishal himself provide the stylish, sleek and rock feel to the song. It isn’t the best title track around but is sure to be raised to another level with visuals revolving around Saif, Kareena, Akshay and Anil.

Another unique characteristic of the album is that it brings across the attitude and Tashan(style) expressed by each character in the film in terms of dialogues . 'Pooja Ka Tashan' by Kareena, 'Jimmy Ka Tashan' by Saif, 'Bachchan Pande Ka Tashan' by Akshay and 'Bhaiyyaji Ka Tashan' by Anil respectively. The finest of these come from Akshay as Bachchan Pande and Bhaiyyaji is pretty interesting with lines such as ‘I issspeaking English Phully..sahi galat ko maaro goli!’ but draws similarities to Javed Jaffrey from Salam Namaste.

On the whole, Tashan comes in as a good blend of diverse languages and it’s the Bhojpuri element that brings in the zing and carries the true tashan of the album. With an appealing star cast and their unique tashan’s, the tracks are set for a face lift as the promotion of the tracks are set to get more intense over the next few days.

Sirf Music Review

Sirf - Decent start for debutant Sohail Sen
rating:2/5

Sirf comes across as a movie bringing forth the stories of people living in metros very much like Anurag Basu’s ‘Life in a Metro’. The only difference here, being that ‘Sirf’ has been done on much lower budgets and seems void of the necessary publicity.

The album marks the debut of composer Sohail Sen. Indi-pop diva Shibani Kashyap also does her bit as composer.

The album opens to ‘Ghar Tera Ghar Mera’ a sweet and romantic track enhanced further by vocals from Shaan and Shreya Ghosal. The track brings about the typical filmy elements of what makes a home but is indeed well composed and crooned. The track tends to grow on you eventually.

‘Pehla Woh Pyaar’ crooned to the ever zealous voice of Kunal Ganjawala tries to bring in that essence and thirst for one’s first love but remains majorly mediocre. Kunal brings about the passion cum rock feel to the track but fails to impress.

‘Mumbai Nagariya’ comes in as a number that tries to captures various emotions across the city. The track which acts more as a background score has been rendered by KK and Tarannum. It isn’t the best around but does pretty well.

“Tuj Pe Fida” comes in as a club dance number sung by the composer Sohail Sen himself. Sohail delivers well with the vocals and delivers well with the nasals. The track however gets a little vague in its music and composition elements especially with the introduction of the female voice rendered by Tarannum.

‘Khel Jo Khele’ brings in the brazen Vinod Rathod to a track that puts forth the game of life. The track is much below average and is just synonyms to the’ Khel’ of life tracks that have been done over and over again in bollywood.

Shibani Kashyap does her bit as music composer with the ‘Life Peeche Peeche’ number. The track comes as a combo of one’s dreams and the ongoing process of life. The track has been well composed and crooned and is sure to do well with due promotion.

Kunal Ganjawala is reintroduced into the album with a more subtle number ‘Zindagi Ki Kahani’. The track carries inspirational overtones well blended with Kunal’s voice bringing about a ray of hope through its lyrical compositions. It simply is the best track of the album. Pamela Jain accompanies Kunal to provide for the female vocals creating a serenading effect.

On the whole , ‘Sirf’ is a decent album by debutant Sohail Sen with tracks such as ‘Ghar Tera…’, ‘Zindagi Ki Kahani’ and ‘Life Peeche Peeche’ doing well to sustain the film on the music front. But, the lack of due promotions are bound to affect both the album and the film.

Shaurya Music Review

Shaurya - A good mix of tracks!
rating:2/5

Samar Khan returns as director with Shaurya after the much disastrous Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye. This time around he leaves behind romance and explores the very crux of bravery. With a talented bunch of actors like Rahul Bose , K.K. Menon and Minisha Lamba; the film promises some good cinema.

Well, for the music of the film; Adnan Sami combines with ace lyricist Javed Akhtar to provide us with varying numbers.

The 6 track album opens with ‘Dheere Dheere’ –a soft, soothing number that magnifies the simplicity and serenity of love. Adnan Sami and Sunidhi Chauhan combine to provide this soothing effect. Sunidhi who is often known for her loud numbers such as ‘Dus Bahane Karke’ , this time enters a phase of complete tranquility with this soft and slow paced song.

‘Dosti Kya Hai’ brings the theme of friendship yet again to bollywood. This time around Abhijeet and Udit Narayan combine to explore the commitment and companionship expressed by two friends. The lyrics has been well written without being preachy in putting across the very essence of friendship. The track isn’t loud and the musical arrangements are smooth. With good amount of promotion this track can surely be one of the top tracks for the next friendship day.

‘Jaane Kyun Jaaneman’ brings Sunidhi Chauhan at her loud best. Sunidhi renders to a pulsating disco number. The party track has got a very raunchy feel and do just ok.The track draws elements from the Bee Gee’s hit number ‘Staying Alive’. The promotional video with Saif Ali Khan’s ex-Rosa might just help in lifting this dance club number.

‘Ghabra Ke Dar Dar Ke’ is yet another loud, disco track with electronic orchestration. Sunidhi Chauhan and Adnan Sami render a track that sounds like a typical bollywood item number. The track fails to hook the listener and doesn’t prove a hit. This club number falls flat especially in comparison to the previous one on the album.

The title track of Shaurya just lifts the album. The track crooned by the energetic Kunal Ganjawala brings in those elements of bravery and the theme of the film. The track is trendy, racy and Kunal brings out bravery with utmost passion. The track carries the soft rock tint and promises to hook every listener. The lyrics are just fabulous and the composition is rocking. This number is sure to provide for some good background score and with good promotion this one is headed to be an anthem for bravery.

Finally comes the ‘Shaurya Poetry’ written by Jaydeep Sarkar who is the man behind the script of the film. The poetry is just so crisp and tunes you to the mood of the film. Like a cherry to top it all, Shahrukh Khan lends his magnificent voice to these beautifully penned lines. After Shahrukh’s contribution to Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye in Samar’s last film as a guest appearance, this time he makes his vocal presence felt. Unlike ‘Sattar Minute’ from Chak De, King Khan doesn’t get too loud rather with complete serenity within a span of 2 minutes he explains the crux of Shaurya.

On the whole , Shaurya has got a good mix of tracks ranging from the soothing romantic ‘Dheere Dheere’ to the amplification of friendship through ‘Dosti Kya Hai’ followed by the thumping ‘Jaane Kyun Jaaneman’ and the inspiring title track. The music gives you a clear understanding that the film may necessarily not be the so called typical army film. Well, let’s just wait and watch.

UTV inks deal with Selvaraghavan

Mumbai-based media company UTV has inked a deal to co-produce three Tamil movies with ace director K. Selvaraghavan's firm Double Zero, publicists said here Monday
The deal will provide opportunities for new directors, Selvaraghavan told the media.

'While one of the films will feature my brother Dhanush as its hero, we are looking at other directors who will finalise the rest of the cast,' Selvaraghavan said.

At present, besides directing 'Aayirathil Oruvan' starring KarthiK and Reema Sen, Selvaraghavan is also making untitled Hindi venture for Mumbai-based film maker Boney Kapoor, sources revealed.

Selvaraghavan shot to fame, along with sibling Dhanush, through 'Kaadal Kondein' in 2003 that also established the career of actress Sonia Aggarwal.

Though his subsequent movies including the critically acclaimed '7G Rainbow Colony' did not set the cash registers ringing, selection of offbeat subjects and a distinct narrative style has set apart this mechanical engineer, who strayed into filmdom to assist his father and director Kasthoori Raja.

UTV also has a partnership with the Radhika Sarath Kumar-owned Radaan Mediaworks (India) Ltd to produce Tamil films.

Shah Rukh is a joy: Juhi Chawla

Vibrant and cheerful film actor Juhi Chawla loves being in superstar Shah Rukh Khan's company as he gives her great joy.
On being asked whether she prefers Shah Rukh as a friend, as a co-actor or as a business partner, Juhi flashed her million- dollar smile and replied: 'I like Shah Rukh everywhere!

'He is a sharp person and great fun to be with. He is great in whatever he does and, yes, he is truly a joy.' Juhi was here last week to launch the 'Bhootnath' collection for Biba, a fashion retail outlet.

Besides acting, it is her involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches that sets her pulse racing.

Juhi, who is co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team along with Shah Rukh, said: 'IPL is really exciting but it is also stressful for me.'

Dressed in a simple kurti and pants with no accessories, Juhi spoke about her recently released film 'Bhootnath'. The initial response to the film has not been good, but Juhi asserted that it was being appreciated the world over.

'I am so happy that the film is being appreciated. I had a great time working with the child (Aman Siddiqui) and Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) and it is a special film for me,' she said.

'Bhootnath' is a story based on the relationship of a child with his deceased grandfather, a kind ghost whom the child gradually befriends. Juhi and Shah Rukh play Aman's parents in the film.

Since the film was centred on Amitabh and Aman, didn't she feel overshadowed?

'I have been asked about this many times but, frankly, I could neither have played the ghost nor the child! So there is nothing like being overshadowed in the film.

'I feel that as long as we play our given parts well, we are noticed and our work is also appreciated,' Juhi said.

Talking about her future projects, Juhi said she was playing the role of a fortune-teller in Aziz Mirza's 'Kismet Konnection'. 'It's a small role but a very different one,' she said.

Pokiri Jodi to Reunite

Mahesh Babu is on the top of world right now. With Athidi breaking UTV records that no Hindi film has broken, with projects lined up with some of the best makers in the industry and Pokiri being titled as one of the biggest blockbusters Telugu cinema has ever seen, the superstar has it all. In true Mahesh style, he says that the success is from the luck that his son’s birth has brought into his life, but fans surely know there is more to this success than just luck.

Pokiri not only gave Telugu cinema one of its biggest blockbusters in history but it's also presented a new hit jodi. Now the same jodi is all set to make a come back; Mahesh and Illeana are ready to bring that magic back on screen with Trivikram’s untitled project.

Trivikram previously worked with Mahesh in Athadu and fans are absolutely delighted to see the director and actor combo making a comeback. Mahesh has commenced shooting for Trivikram’s movie and it should be ready to hit the screens early next year to coincide with the festival of Sankranti.

Jannat Movie Review

credits
Banner: Vishesh Films
Cast: Emraan Hashmi,Samir Kochhar,Sonal Chauhan,Vishal Malhotra,Javed Sheikh
Direction: Kunal Deshmukh
Production: Mukesh Bhatt
Music: Pritam Chakraborty
rating:2/5

Emraan Hashmi returns with none other than the Bhatt camp accompanied by some good music by Pritam. But this time the Bhatt camp brings to you debutant Kunal Deshmukh spearheading the direction and partnering Vishesh Bhatt on the screenplay. Vishesh also makes his debut as story writer.

‘Jannat’ is the story of a man caught in a quagmire of crime and consumerism as he struggles to find heaven on earth.

Arjun (Emraan Hashmi) is a reckless young man with an obsession for making money at card games. A chance meeting with a girl named Zoya (Sonal Chauhan) in a mall gives him the reasons he was looking for to move out of his ordinary life. He steps up from playing small-time card games to becoming a bookie.

Stuck in a triangle of sorts between the woman he loves and his addiction to make a quick buck, Arjun moves on from being a bookie to a runner for the mafia.

He steps into the world of match fixing. Arjun switches on the limelight to something bigger, better, and faster, until his dizzying rise attracts the attention of the police. Arjun has to now choose between the love of his life, Zoya, and this newfound success and power.

As Arjun struggles to choose between the two, the Don offers the forbidden fruit of limitless wealth in exchange of his soul and draws him into his core entourage of money spinners.

How far will the horizon of reality stretch as Arjun and Zoya tread a fine, fast-blurring line between right and wrong to find the heaven they have been looking for?

Kunal Deshmukh gets a great chance to prove quite a bit with his very first film but gets it extremely wrong. Firstly the story by Vishesh Bhatt isn’t well defined; Jannat is neither a movie on cricketers nor is it a love story. It’s just such a mix of undefined confusing events that take you nowhere.

The first half just tries to build up the events by portraying an obsessed Emraan and how unconvincingly debutant Sonal falls for our bollywood’s serial kisser. The dialogues of the film by Sanjay Masoom are so dull. Certain remarks made at cricketers and scenes involving Pakistani cricket players won’t certainly find favour with a large section of the audiences especially from Pakistan.

The second half too has nothing much to offer with the cops and bad guys enveloping poor Emraan and his love story.

The cinematography of the film by Manoj Soni has nothing in store in spite of locations such as Cape Town.

The music is the primary reason that keeps the audiences engrossed the music by Pritam and Kamran Ahmad’s ‘Judaai’ are already hit numbers. But many would be disappointed not to find Kamran’s male version of ‘Judaai’.

On the acting front Emraan does carry the style and attitude. He is indeed convincing as the bookie but the weak script makes the love story fall flat.

Sonal Chauhan struggles with her character. She isn’t convincing enough and fails majorly in a film where the writers wanted to express a tragic love story engulfed by obsession.

The supporting actors Jawed Sheikh , Samir Kocchar and Vishal Malhotra are terrific as per the demands of the script.

On the whole , Jannat is a poor tale from the Bhatt camp and it’s quite surprising that the camp that explores varying love stories such as ‘Who Lamhe’ and ‘Gangster’ and eventually convert them into massive hits ; fall flat in the process of gambling with a love story and encashing on the current cricket madness of the IPL.

Bhoothnath Movie Review

credits
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla Shahrukh Khan, Aman Siddiqui, Priyanshu Chatterjee
Direction: Vivek Sharma
Production: Ravi Chopra
rating:3.5/5

Much has been said about Bhoothnath right from the pairing of Amitabh and Shahrukh after a long time and the potential that the debutant director Vivek Sharma carries.

After films such as ‘Bhagbhan’ , ‘Babul’ , comes yet another film from the reputed B.R. Films but this time around unlike their previous ventures you neither get to see a typical family drama nor the presence of Ravi Chopra spearheading the direction of the film. This time the offering is absolutely new and fresh with debutant Vivek Sharma exploring the relationship between a young boy and a spirit in a very innovative, humorous manner.

The story revolves around a 7 year old naughty boy –Banku(Aman Siddiqui) whose family(Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla) comes to live in a mansion in Goa. The mansion-Nath Villa is considered haunted after the demise of Kailash Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife.

No one dares to stay at Nath Villa and soon the spirit wants to get rid of his new rival-Banku. All attempts to scare Banku fail and the two now develop a new bond. The so called ghost is renamed as Bhootnath and Banku soon becomes Bhootnath’s ‘Angel’.

Thinks take a turn when Kailash Nath’s son (Priyanshu Chatterjee) returns from the U.S. to sell Nath Villa.

Firstly, if there is any misconception that Bhootnath is a horror flick, keep all your perceptions aside and digest the fact that this flick is actually a cute film for the complete family. It’s meant for all audiences and just because it explores the relationship between a kid and a ghost ,doesn’t mean that it’s a ‘Kiddie’ movie or so.

Director Vivek Sharma excels with his very first film. Unlike most directors, he doesn’t get carried away by the star presence of either Amitabh or Shahrukh and does no gigs such as an item number or so to enhance the stars but rather sticks to the very basics of a simple script and its simple storytelling.

Bhootnath isn’t the most unique or rarest of scripts but it is the simplicity in story telling that really keeps you entertained and brings out the kid in you. Vivek makes you laugh and even gets the audience moist eyed with couple of sequences.

Be it the sequence where Banku hurts himself by falling off the staircase or be it Banku’s rift with Bhootnath, the movie has a certain emotional connect with the audience.

The characters in the film have been so well sketched out and are indeed relevant to the storytelling process. Be it the peon or the principal(Satish Shah) who eats all the tiffin boxes at school or even Anthony(Rajpal Yadav) the beggar; each of them make you laugh and are unique in some way or the other.

On the technical front, the movie is supreme in terms of its special effects. These effects raise the bar of the film. Watch out for the movement of dry leaves, Banku’s hand stretching out to help a friend in a pit, Amitabh’s expressions to scare the kid etc. It’s simply brilliant for a Hindi film.

The cinematography by Vishnu Rao is simple and sleek which make possible the addition of such brilliant visual effects.

The music by Vishal-Shekar isn’t great and the movie pace get hampered by a bunch of tracks forced in. But in any case the visual’s of ‘Mere Buddy’ further enhanced by the bloopers when the credit rolls makes this track grow on you.

On the acting front, the movie truly belongs to Aman Siddiqui and Amitabh Bachchan. Aman impresses tremendously with his naughty expressions, cute laughter and dialogue delivery. You may even have tears trickle towards the climax where you see Aman cry out loud looking at the stars, searching for Bhootnath.

Amitabh Bachan returns to form like never before. His bonding with Aman is superb and the relationship explored here is much superior to the Amitabh-Sweeney relationship in Cheeni Kum. After a disastrous 2007 with movies such as ‘Nishabd’ and ‘Aag’, most people wrote Amitabh off. But , Bhootnath really justifies the lines ‘Ain’t nobody does it better’ from the ‘Mere Buddy’ track. Amitabh really proves that he is still young at heart and has the zest to go on. He makes you laugh with his expressions, his attire and also brings in those necessary emotions with his anger scenes and his explanation of forgiveness to the kid. Even the very utterance of the word ‘Angel’ from Amtabh’s mouth brings in that emotional connect.

Juhi Chawla does really well as the mother. She is convincing and makes you giggle at times. Shahrukh Khan does a decent job as the father. Satish Shah is extremely funny. As the principal with an anglo-Indian accent, he is sure to make both the young and old laugh. Rajpal yadav has a very small role in the film as the beggar but is indeed good. He expresses well and his lines are witty enough.

Priyanshu does well and surely deserves meatier roles. Ashish Choudhary and Nauheed Cyrusi are barely ok.

Bhootnath does have its share of flaws, primarily the second half which gets a little stretched out with the addition of songs. But, in any case it’s a movie worth watching this summer and might provide for some good lessons on forgiveness. As for parents, watch out for the athletic meet scene where Amitabh explains that success can be achieved only by hard work and not magic- A good lesson to be learnt.

Let’s hope Bhootnath ends the dry spell at the boxoffice. In any case leave cricket aside and go watch Bhootnath, you won’t regret doing so.

Jimmy Movie Review

credits
Cast: Mimoh,Vivana
Direction: Raj N Sippy
rating:1 out of 5

One of the many debuts this year is of Mithun Chakraborthy’s son Mimoh who was apparently supposed to make his debut with another film ‘HE’. Though we haven’t heard of that film which was also to be the launch for Hansika Mowani , Jimmy now comes as Mimoh’s official launch pad.

Director Raj N Sippy , the man behind movies such as ‘Kudrat’ , ‘Satte Pe Satta’ and ‘Inkaar’ returns to direction after a hiatus . Mithun Chakraborthy makes his presence felt as one of the producers of the film.

Synopsis….

A young woman’s body is recovered by the police. All leads to Jimmy (Mimoh ).A mechanical engineer by day and a dancing sensation by night , Jimmy works as a DJ in the local discotheque to pay off the debts left behind by his late father. While everybody is shocked, Jimmy owns up to the murder and is sentenced to death.

In a twist of fate, Jimmy realizes in jail that he has been drawn into a vicious conspiracy. Is it too late to unveil the truth?

The only reason why one would go to watch this movie is the hype surrounding Mimoh. Neither the songs nor the promos of the film have made any contribution towards enticing the audiences.

The only thing that came out from the promos was the fact that indeed Mimoh is a good dancer.

On the directional front, Raj N Sippy has made a complete mess. He seems to forget that the year is 2008 and Indian audiences are much mature and thus expect some quality content when they go ahead and watch a film.

The writer of the script- Ranbir Pushp the man behind Shahrukh’s debut ‘Deewana’ fails to understand what he really wants to put across to the audience. There is nothing gripping about the script and instead of being a movie that gives you a chill that you expect from a thriller , you are bound to laugh at the flow of events be it Mimoh’s brain tumor or the suspense behind the film.

The movie is filled with clichés and the dialogues are simply humorous especially the ‘you are a rejected person!’ bit.

On the acting front Vivana who has been seen in the thumbs up ad with Akshay Kumar has no scope,Rahul Dev and Sayed Zulfi are wasted.

As for Mimoh though many have commented about his voice, well that’s not a problem at all as you can’t expect every hero to sound like Amitabh Bachchan. Mimoh does prove he has great dancing skills but as an actor has a long way to go.

On the whole Jimmy doesn’t favour Mimoh Chakraborthy and won’t find favour at the box office too.

Mr. White Mr. Black Movie Review

Deepak Shivdasani, the director of the film , may have also forgotten about Mr.Black Mr. White but graciously the movie finds its way to the theatres . For a film that stars Suniel Shetty and Arshad Warsi , you would expect it to be a crowd puller. But what if the product which has been in the making for over 3 years sounds and tastes stale?

Synposis…..

Gopi [Suniel Shetty], a simpleton, arrives in Goa from Hoshiarpur. His mission - to hand over a piece of land to his childhood friend Kishen [Arshad Warsi]. Kishen swindles people with a little help from his accomplice [Atul Kale], to earn enough money to educate his sibling Divya [Mahima Mehta], who's studying in London. Kishen, however, has managed to hide his profession from Anuradha [Rashmi Nigam] by cooking up an alibi of a twin brother, Hari, who's the bad guy.

Kishen avoids Gopi like he's bad news. He's not going to give up his flourishing business and travel to Hoshiarpur just to take possession of a measly piece of land. Meanwhile, diamonds worth Rs. 25 crores have been stolen by three girls, who are now holed up in Goa. Kishen traces the three girls and succeeds in robbing the diamonds. But the diamonds actually belong to a don, Laadla [Ashish Vidyarti], who has also reached Goa.

Who gets the diamonds?.....

Well, honestly who cares? Deepak Shivdasani who has been the anchor behind films such as ‘Gopi Kishen’ , ‘Bhai’ , ‘Krishna’etc fails miserably with his 11th or 13th film. What he fails to realize is films with poor comedy and so called item numbers and skin show with foreign models such as Tania Zaetta don’t appeal to the Indian audiences anymore. In fact, wonder whether this formula would even work in villages as the songs of the film too are very poor.

Screenplay by Sanjeev Duggal and Nishikant Kamat give you a head ache. Dialogues by Sanjay Pawar work out only for Ashish Vidyarthi.

Music composers of the film –Jatin Lalit , Tuaseef Akhtar , Shamir Tandon fail to create anything impressive.

On the acting graph , Arshad Warsi and Suniel Shetty are equally boring . Tania Zaetta, Kamala Ning , Sandhya Mridul are there to add the ‘chic’ material to the film. They hardly act and just sing around in their bikini.

Anishka Khosla is poor. Rashmi Nigam barely ok. Shehzad Khan is so fake and if there is one person who entertains you momentarily it’s none other than Ashish Vidyarthi. Ashish returns to comedy after a very long time. His sequences involving the “Maa” element are hilarious.

The film seems to be tormented by difficulties right from the initial stages which can also be observed in the lack of continuity in Arshad Warsi’s looks in the film.

On the whole, the delay in the film further enhanced by lack of promotions and a very dull script is sure to make this film a complete washout. We wish Deepak and the producers all the best for their next venture and we are sure that this failure will act as a stepping stone to their next success.

Audio Review - Jalsa

Name: Jalsa (2008)
Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Ileana, Parvati Melton & Kamalinee Mukherjee
Director: Trivikram
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Lyrics: Sirivennela, Bhaskarabhatla, Rama Joagaiah Sastry, Raquib Alam
Producer: Allu Arvind
Jalsa is sheer fun

The first time coming together of many artistes – Trivikram, Pawan Kalyan, Devi, Illeana – has generated so much buzz and hype around Jalsa that it’s just incredible. How else can one explain the audio leakage of 3 very good numbers from this album even before the official music launch? How else can one explain the video leakage of Gaallo Telinattundei song? Whatever has happened is bad but it may have very well turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the movie. Despite the atrocious video quality, Gaallo looked like a cracker of a song. But that, my friends, is beside the point as we’ll all head to the nearest theaters next week to check that out.

The question for now is, does Devi score it big with his musical score? Read on –

1. Jalsa nil
The title song of Trivikram’s Atadu was a somber number speaking about the hero’s character and his persona in the movie and if Jalsa’s title song is any indication, Pawan is a super hero with full of masti. Saying it all are some catchy lyrics by Sirivennela. Devi’s choice of the singer couldn’t have been more appropriate for Baba Sehgal, returning to Telugu after Roop Tera Mastana [Rikshavodu], injects that aforementioned masti into this enthusiastic number accompanied by Rita. Sehgal croons Karo karo zara Jalsa and you unknowingly chime in.

And if this doesn’t spice you up, there’s a very cool remix in the album that is sung by Baba Sehgal and Devi.

2. My Heart Is Beating fullhalf
It’s a beaten to death situation – a guy expressing his feelings upon discovering that he is in love; something like, say, Nenu nenuga lenei [Manmadhudu]. While Sirivennela wrote the latter song completely with words that have a poetic touch, here he opts for the youth appealing route by embellishing the song with English words and yet talking about talapulu, talagaDa to talabaDaTam, paDuchu ratHam, madanuDi rhythm etc. Undoubtedly, this ranks very high among Kay Kay’s Telugu song renditions. Outstanding! Take a bow, sir. And you too Devi, for giving us quite a melody.

I shuddered to try the remix version of this song, dreading to imagine the outcome; but what you hear takes you by a pleasant surprise. A sensible rework enhancing the beauty of the song.

3. You & I nil
By the time you hear this song (assuming you’ve heard the above two prior to this), you’d be really surprised by the way Sirivennela was asked to write lyrics to the songs that were given to him in this album. Trivikram’s request to Sirivennela must have been - Whatever you write, please ensure it is catchy so it appeals instantly to the jalsa craving youth. Sirivennela abides by that but not sidelining the core quality. While you hear a line like - “You and I lets go high and do balle balle. Life is like a Saturday night let’s do balle balle.”, at the same time you also hear a line – unTE neelO nammakam kanneerAinaa amrutam, kashTam kooDaa adBhutam kaadaa? Both the stanzas are beautifully worded; especially the second one is a classic flowing out of Sirivennela’s pen. Devi does a wonderful job of both singing and composing this high energy number.

4. Chalore Chalore Chal halfnil
apuDepuDO aaTavikam, mari ipudO aadHunikam! yuga yugaalugaa yE mrugaala kanna ekkuva Em edigaam?
raamuDila edagagalam, raakshasulanu minchagalam! rakarakaala musugulu vEstu marichaam epuDO sonta muKham.
Need I say anything more? Sirivennela’s razor sharp words depict the frustration of some genuinely concerned souls in this short song sung with gusto by Ranjith.

There’s also a Hindi version that is penned by Raquib Alam and he does a great job too. Devi sings it which though catchier than the Telugu version isn’t as forceful. Then again, Raquib wasn’t transliterating it from Telugu.

5. Jennifer Lopez fullfullfullnilnil
Agreed its catchy but per me this is the weakest link of the album. Rama Jogaiah Sastry’s words are crooned in a lively manner by Benny and Priya but at times their irritatingly accented singing, coming across as a deliberate attempt, gets on to your nerves.

6. Gaallo Telinattunde fullfullfullfullnil
Despite it’s heard before feel, this one’s infectious mainly for Devi’s racy rhythm and tempo. Tippu and Gopika Poornima lend their voices to the words written by Bhaskarabhatla. If this one doesn’t get you grooving yet, then I bet you’ll like this song better after you’ve seen it because it has some cool choreo.

When Trivikram, who is not known to speak much in public functions, announced during the music launch of Jalsa that Devi’s music for Jalsa is extraordinary, you cannot help but to take his words seriously. Devi’s music for Jalsa, despite some traces of trademark Devi stuff, is peppy, youthful and incredibly fun filled, keeping in tune with the name of the film and may be even the hero’s character in the film. And perhaps that explains why Trivikram said what he said.

final verdit:To cut a long story short, Jalsa is sheer fun!

Music: Mani Sharma

Producer: C Aswini Dutt
Story, Screenplay, Dialogues & Direction: Mehar Ramesh
Release date: 9 May 2008

Meher Ramesh, who directed several Kannada hit films and also worked with director Puri Jagannath, directed Kantri starring NTR, Hansika and Tanisha. The expectations on the film are high. Though the film has good potential, good shot takings, superb performance by NTR, excellent work done by Sameer Reddy with camera and Mani Sharma with music, the film fails to reach the expectations due to lag and not so well etched screenplay.

Kranti for the good and Kantri for the bad (NTR) joins PR Exports company run by PR (Prakashraj) and (Seshu)Ashish Vidyarthi. PR company is involved in illegal activities with PR based out of Hongkong and Seshu running the same in India. Kranti uses his muscle for Seshu. Kranti is a dynamic guy who cares for no one and raises quickly in the eyes of PR and Seshu. On one point they break up and Kranti starts his own gang. This brings PR to India. In a face-to-face, PR and Kranti realize that PR is Kranti's father. What happens next should be seen on the screen.

NTR's show is amazing in the film. His dialogue delivery, stunts and dances become major highlights. His more stylized presentation and performance has come to rock for his fans, leave alone the fate of the movie in the coming days. Hansika's performance is akin to her debut in Desamuduru, doing a soft and glamorous role where there is no scope for exhibiting her innate talents. Tanisha is limited to couple of songs and skin show. Prakashraj is content in his role. So are Ashish Vidyarthi, Shiyaji Shinde, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Ajay Sastry etc. Subbaraju got good scope in the film and he did it well. Sunil, shown as Rajani Hasan, is not impressive. Ali, Brahmanandam appear in short roles and are okay in their roles. Krishna Bhagawan also did a short role but provides relief with his comedy timing.

First 20-30 minutes of the film and the last 15 minutes of the film are worth talking about. The rest of the film just goes on. Even the dialogs (penned by Meher Ramesh) are good in the first 20-30 minutes. In fact, there are couple of dialogs for NTR that would send his fans to aisle. His introduction is done on a cycle and when one goon says 'Cycle meeda vachi kottestava', NTR responds 'Cycle meeda vachi sanchalanalu srushtinchina charitra marichipoyara...leka inkevvaru cycle meeda raranukunnara'; 'naaku thelisi ye blood relation lekunda andharu Anna ani sambodhinche athanu okkade.. athanu swargam lo unnaru'; 'weight thaggindhi body lo, head weight alage undhi.. by birth';

Meher Ramesh handled story, screenplay, dialogs and direction for this film. The film is stylish and his shot takings are good and few dialogs had good punch. However, he should have taken more care with the narration. First half runs for 1 1/2 hour but feels really long. With that kind of first half, the entire burden moved on to the second half. Second half does not do any better until the last 15 mintues. Reason is that there is not much content and lot of action in this meantime. Also, Tanisha's character is not at all required. It is not properly developed nor there is any significant impact of the character on the plot. Also, track was made to insert some comedy. Except for Krishna Bhagawan's liners, rest did not work out. Sunil's track is another sequence that did not contribute much to the film. Sunil, Brahmanandam episode fails to entertain. Few songs are good. Couple of songs feel the same pattern. There are total of 6 songs - 3 in first half and 3 in second half. Also, how Kranti tricks PR is inspired from Bluff Master.

Behind the screen, camera work by Sameer Reddy is outstanding. Mani Sharma gave fitting background score and songs are good. Three songs came out very good.. Kantri, Vayasu Nami, and I go crazy.

Kantri is all about NTR. He is a visual treat on the screen. The script had good potential if only the narration worked out well. Overall, Kantri turns out to be just about average fare that too because of the presence of NTR. It can be watched once only for him.

final verdit : disappointng suff after a big blockbuster yamadonga

Audio Review - Kantri

Name: Kantri (2008)
Cast: NTR & Hansika Motwani
Director: Mehar Ramesh
Music: Mani Sharma
Lyrics: Sirivennela, Anant Sreeram, Rama Joagaiah Sastry, Mehar Ramesh
Producer: C Aswini Dutt
Kantri - Variety

Mehar Ramesh’s only claim to fame is that he has remade two Telugu movies [Okkadu and Andhrawala] into Kannada. Now, that by itself doesn’t speak much about him who is debuting in Telugu as a director with Kantri. But when I read that the Kannada version of Andhrawala – Veera Kannadiga – turned out to be a hit, I nearly fell off my chair. What his guru [Puru Jagan] couldn’t achieve, this sishya nailed it down with such aplomb and success and that too with such a tacky script, says something about his talent. Little wonder then that Aswini Dutt gives him a chance to resurrect lost glory of Vyjayanthi Movies banner, reeling under a series of flops [Subhash Chandra Bose, Balu, Jai Chiranjeeva, Sainikudu etc], by roping in NTR and Hansika Motwani.

Mani Sharma, a regular with Aswini Dutt and NTR, expectedly has been asked to compose music for this album, which, surprisingly, was released into the market without any fanfare. endukalaa... manakendukanDi? elaavundO maTTtuku manaki ok kadanDi! So, without further adoo -

1. 123 Nenoka Kantri halfnil
This high energy hero worshipping number has a racy rhythm and a slight rock tinge to it. While Naveen and Karunya sing the hero worshipping lines, NTR himself croons the lines declaring ‘123 nEnoka kantiri... by birthE undi timmiri’. If picturized well, something like the hero introduction song of Vivek Oberoi’s Dum, this will be lapped up in a big way and why not when it starts off with lines – maasullO veeDE pedda maasugaaDu lErO, classullo veeDE mahaa naatugadu lErO. Mehar Ramesh takes it upon himself to give the required zing to the worshipping aspect in the lyrics.

2. Ammaha halfnil
Though we’ve heard better melody numbers from Mani, this one’s a medium paced melody number written by Sirivennela, basking in the glorious vocals of Karthik and Chitra. Not exactly a haunting number but impressive nonetheless. You may not play it many times but like the chorus in the song, you will want to definitely play it ‘one more time’.

3. Vayasunamy nil
Mani Sharma reuses his popular Vasantha Mullai song from Tamil Pokkiri here and after listening to the song; you can’t help but appreciate his decision. While the Tamil version was sung by Rahul Nambiar, Hema Chandra and Sunitha sing the Telugu version, penned by Veturi. Inspite of ‘heard before’ beats in the interludes, this one works big time because of a spirited rendition by the singers and an instantly appealing 50’s feel to the orchestration.

4. I go crazy halfnil
An interesting composition by Mani. Even in his massest of mass songs (if there is a phrase like that), Mani made his singers take the ever pleasing gamakaalu but here he goes full throttle in coming up with a fusion of semi western and classical music not just in vocals but also in the orchestration. Even if Anantha Sriram’s lyrics don’t make much sense, let that not deter you from trying this one. This one’s a novel composition by Mani and he has managed to make it extremely catchy. Rahul Nambiar and Jey’s animated rendition is another asset to the track.

5. Janthar Manthar fullfullfullnilnil
Good beats, nice chorus and entertaining in parts is how I’d sum up this song. If you beg to differ, go ahead. Either Ranjith and Rita’s vocals or Anantha Sriram’s janthar manthar lyrics may work their charm on you but I am spared and am not complaining much.

6. Raamaare fullfullhalfnilnil
Have you heard the phrase ‘method to one’s madness’? When a music director is given a contrived situation of a festival song and is demanded a kickekkinche mass number with a whole lot of drum beats, there is really very little the poor composer can do. With a just about okay tune, the only way he can bring in some novelty is by roping in popular Bollywood singers. That my friends, is a method to Mani’s madness here. So despite seasoned singers like Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan lending their vocals, this song meanders in the troughs trying desperately to rise atleast till midway of a crest but sadly doesn’t succeed much and Ramajogayya Sastry’s words don’t offer much help either.

Kantri’s music is like thaali meals. After trying everything on the thaali, you know what you’ve liked the most and end up devouring only that. Mani’s compositions while offering a lot of variety sound like they are composed primarily for NTR to showcase his brilliant agility as a dancer. Variety is good but what if it works in a limited manner?

final verdit:To cut a long story short, Kantri offers variety.

Story, Screenplay & Direction: Bhaskar
Release date: 1 Mayl 2008
This is the second film for director Bhaskar, who earlier delivered critically acclaimed and commercially superduper film Bommarillu. It is tough to say if Bhaskar did overcome the second film sentiment (this is prevelant in the industry that, usually, the second film of a director would not do well). The storyline is thin and the screenplay of the film seems stretched. The film revolves around a father looking for eloped daughter and it feels that there is too much of search. And finally, audience (especially Chiru fans) might correlate some (or alot) of the scenes with Chiru's second daughter Srija's episode. Chances are that the film might get along well for the lady and family audience.

Going into the story, Parugu is about a father and his two daugthers. Neelakantam (Prakashraj) has two daugthers Subbalaxmi (Poonam Bajwa) and Meena (Sheela). Neelakantam is a highly respected person in his place. Neelakantam loves his daugthers more than anything on this earth. His first daughter elopes after her marriage is fixed with someone else. Neelakantam strongly believes that his daughter can never do it and it should be only the guy who might have mislead her. So the search is on for Subbalaxmi. In that context, Neelakantam brings all the friends of the eloped guy to his place. That is how the hero of the film Krishna (Allu Arjun) lands up at Neelakantam's place along with his friends (Srinivasa Reddy, Sunil, Chitram Srinu and two more). Little does Neelakantam know at that time that Krishna is the mastermind who planned the elopement. Krishna plans to run away but promptly falls in love with Meena and returns back. Meena, who knows the agony her father went through due to Subbalaxmi, is very strong on the stand that she would not fall in love. Did Neelakantam finally find Subbalaxmi? Was Krishna able to convince Neelakantam and Subbalaxmi on his love? That has to be seen on the screen.

Allu Arjun is at ease in his role as Krishna. His dances are natural but did not have the energy that was seen in Desamuduru. He exceled in the emotional scenes towards the climax. Prakashraj, as the father of two daugthers, did his role good. Well! It is just yet another role for Prakashraj. There isnt anything special about it. Sheela is very impressive in the role of Meena. As an innocent girl in the first half and as a girl who is sandwiched between her father and her love in the second half, Sheela did the roles convincingly. Poonam Bajwa's role is short and she did it good. Jayasudha is unnatural in few scenes. She played the mother of Allu Arjun. Rest of the cast is content in their roles.

The expectations are high on this film coming from the director of Bommarillu. In fact, the very points that paved the success way to Bommarillu lacked in this one. Bhaskar, who proved his screenplay expertise in Bommarillu, could not repeat his magic with screenplay here. Even though some of the scenes like Allu Arjun, Sheela scene after he saves her from the rowdies and Prakashraj's drunk dialogs on his daugther show the brand of Bhaskar. Such scenes came out excellent. Overall film feels dragged. This is felt both in the first half and the second half. Neelakantam searching for his daughter at different places feels boring after a while.

Dialogs penned by Ravi are good. Music by Mani Sharma is interesting. He might have been in a conflicting cornor where the hero is energetic and good dancer while the situations required kind of soft. Lyrical value in the songs is good. Cinematography is okay.

Overall, Parugu could have come out better with some editing in the first half and better screenplay. The film feels dragged with lot of searching for Neelakantam's daughter. The run of the film depends on how the family and lady audience receives it. And also there are several star studded films are in line for release.

final verdit: story must have been changed slightly finally may be an avg fick depends on other releases of the season

Bhale Dongalu - Review

sadwik rating: 2.75/5

Music: KM Radha Krishnan
Dialogues: Abburi Ravi
Art: Narayana Reddy
Action: Ram Lakshman
Editing: Marthand k Venkatesh
Story -screenplay – direction: K Vijaya Bhaskar
Presents: Bellamkonda Suresh
Producer: Sakhamuri Pandu Ranga Rao
Release date: 11 April 2008
When a movie deals with thieves, it requires a lot of entertainment. Bhale Dongalu, starring top heroine Ileana and Tarun, who keeps a low profile since several years, offers average show. Though director Vijaya Bhaskar credited himself as the storywriter, there is no iota of originality anywhere in the film. Better, the film may be called a copycat of Bunty Aur Bubly. There is no justification in Vijayabhaskar's words that the story was the product of his brain.

Ramu (Tarun) leaves his home in a huff as he is averse to the suggestion of his dad to take up a job. Jyothi (Ileana) too does the same as she dislikes the marriage proposal of her parents. Both board the same compartment of a running train. By the dawn, the baggage of both is lost. They go to Vizag. Jyothi wants to take part in the Miss India pagenyry there, but couldn't get through. She also faces a lot of humiliation. In each and every step, they encounter cheats. They too want to become like that. Jointly, they operate thieving. Coming to Hyderabad, they don the mantle of Romeo and Juliet. They invite the wrath of a hardcore drug mafia leader and smuggler Virraju (Pradeep Ravat), who becomes their victim. The list of complaints against the duo from the public is on the raise. DCP Yugandhar (Jagapati Babu) gets into the scene to arrest them. Hounded by the gang of Virraju and the police, the duo is always on the run. What happened later forms the crux of the story.

Tarun as Romeo did a good job, showing maturity in expressions, but for those who saw Abhishekh in the role find it embarrassed with Tarun's height. Ileana is a big asset to the film. She did the characterization as Juliet with élan. The mix of both innocence and mischief in her role is apt. But, the costumes didn't suit her well in some of the song sequences. Jagapati Babu as DCP Yugandhar did a fine job. As everybody knows the role was done by none other than Big B in Bunty Aur Bubly. If you bring comparison, you have no other go, but leave the theatre. The villainy on the part of Pradeep Rawat is adequate. Dharmavarapu Subramanyam's comedy as Manmatha Rao is good. His truck with Ileana brings laughter on and often. Sunil appears in the role of a taxi driver, but not with much comedy. Chandra Mohan, Sudha played the roles of Tarun's parents, while they are GVL and Sana for Ileana.

Director Vijayabhaskar, who also is the storywriter, almost lifted the entire movie, but for a few characterization. The villain's characterization done by Pradeep Rawat as Virraju is an addition. Another modification is that the duo on the run in Hindi becomes couple and the girl gets pregnant. Here, it is not done so. The police officer just lets them scot-free as he gets moved by the profuse weeping by Romeo and Juliet. Other than that, each and every scene, emotion and song placement resembles us of Bunty Aur Bubly. The first half lacks entertainment, while the second half gets a thud thanks to the entry of Jagapati Babu as police officer. Another plus point of the film is that Vijayabhaskar had put a lot of concentration on heroine Ileana compared to Tarun. This works as the glamour factor. Dialogues by Abburi Ravi is average. Cinematography is excellent. KM Radhakrishna, who is known for giving class music, tried giving commercial music and he is successful. Charmme's item song with Tarun is a bonus. Lack of vulgarity is another plus point.

Release date: 2 April 2008
Jalsa is a truly Jalsa for Pawan fans. With loads of entertainment, Pawan Kalyan back to form in his energy and looks, and excellent direction by Trivikram will surely prove to be a treat to Pawan fans. However, it might not satisfy those who have extremely high expectations on the film.

Sanjay Sahu (Pawan Kalyan) is a enjoying-life kind of a guy who has lot of degrees proving his interest in education and studying. He is in love with a girl (Kamalini Mukharjee) in the college. But she is engaged and is married to another guy on the force of her father (Prakash Raj). After a few years, two girls Jo (Parvati Melton) and Bhagee (Ileana) fall in love Sanjay. Sanjay says yes to Bhagee. Bhagee happens to be the sister of Kamalini. What are the odds? Now there is a villain who is after Sanjay and also Bhagee is not happy knowing Sanjay was in love with her sister in the past. The rest of the plot should be seen on the screen.

Pawan Kalyan is back again. He looked refreshing, energetic and all back in form. Whatever a fan can ask from Pawan Kalyan is all in this film. Call it excellent comedy timing (especially for those liners done by Trivikram), exciting action sequences and in between Pawan's style of romance with the heroines; Pawan Kalyan is excellent in the film and is a treat to watch. This factor itself is enough to make the movie run at the box office without any hesitation for the fans. Ileana looked glamorous and did her part well. She is impressive in the film because her onscreen chemistry with Pawan Kalyan worked charms. And also the dubbing done for her by Swathi is an additional asset. It is apt and sound sexy. Parvati Melton and Kamalini impresses in their roles even though they are short. Song of Paravati Melton for Jennifer Lopez is done very good. Sivaji is impressive in his short role.

Brahmanandam needs special mention. He played the head constable in the film and is hillarious in his role. He gave the required entertainment element in the second half. Especially the scenes involving Pawan Kalyan and Brahmanandam came out excellent and will throw every one in laughter. Uttej, Ali, Ravi Prakash as friends of Pawan Kalyan are good in their roles. Sunil as Banku Seenu, who wants to do anything 10 seconds ahead of the proposed time, is hillarious in his role. And so is Dharmavarapu, who played doctor for Sunil.

Another special mention in the cast is Prakashraj, who did a variety role of the type asking the hero 'neeku girl friends supply cheyyadanikey nenu koothurlani kanna'. Mukesh Rishi, Thanikella Bharani and co in the bad guys shoes are good.

Entertainment is provided in tons and the cast is perfect, but it is the story that is waferthin lined. There is nothing much in the story. Making and direction are all on high standards matching the Trivikram style showing his brand. And he is highly successful in bringing out Pawan Kalyan the way audience want to see him. Inspite of all these positives, lack of soul in the story is clearly seen. Also, there is another point in the characterization of Pawan Kalyan that the director failed to convince. Having said that the protagonist has gone through a tough ordeal that he became a revolutionist, the spirit is not carried through the character entirely. That entire episode is wrapped up in a simple manner without projecting much effect of the ordeals that the hero went through. Barring that Trivikram is highly successful in projecting everything else in commendable proportions.

Dialogs will be a major asset to the film and that too they came out in Trivikram style targeted for Pawan Kalyan. Samples are, 'bakka chikkina Chiranjeevi laga unnadu... manalni itanem kapadatadu', referring to Pawan Kalyan; Yuddamlo gelavadam mukyam.. champadam kadhu'; 'anthaa chooste... nee daggara anni vunnayi... dabbu, power hodaa anni..anni.. lenidi okate adi bhayam ... sare ika nundi neeku nenistaa bhyaanni.... tannula koddi bhayaanni', Pawan saying this to Villain; These kind of dialogs really rocked and will send the fans to the aisle. Especially these dialogs worked out good for Pawan Kalyan. Also, voice over done by Mahesh Babu worked out very good.

Music by Devisri Prasad is an additional asset. All the songs are very good. However, fans would expect to see Pawan shaking his body more. Camera work done by Guhan and Rasool is simply superb. Srikar Prasad's editing is good. Stunts by Vijay are superb. Sitarama Sastry's lyrics for Chalore Chalore are worth mentioning.

First half is filled with loads of entertainment. Second half of the film starts on revolutionary note but lasts for little time and entertainment kicks in soon after. Brahmanandam's comedy gives full kick to it. Overall, Jalsa is a complete entertainer. There is no question about it. If you are going with sky rocketed expectations, you might be in a little disappointment. One can enjoy the film top to bottom if they are going for good entertainment.

Review

Story

Gamyam Abhiram (Sharwanand) is a filthy rich youngster. He falls in love with a medico called Janaki (Kamalinee Mukherjee), who is a good Samaritan. Janaki is an idealistic girl who believes in doing social service and treating the people around with love and care. Abhiram is a selfish guy who just wants Janaki, but not her noble traits. In the process, they are forced to separate. The rest of the story is all about the road trip Abhiram takes place while searching for his love and discovering his inner-self.

Artists Performance

GamyamSharwanand is good in the role of the main lead. But it is Allari Naresh who hogs the limelight. The character of ’Gaali Seenu’ is probably the best in the career of Allari Naresh. There are similarities between Gaali Seenu character in Gamyam and Jagapati Babu's role in Anthahpuram. Kamalinee Mukherjee’s role is little passive though the entire story revolves around her. She did well. It has become customary for the hero to beg for Kamalinee’s love during the climax in most of the films she worked. The guy who did the role of naxalite helping heroes is very competent.

Technical Departments:

GamyamStory - screenplay - direction: The story of the film is simple as it is a screenplay based film. One can’t help noticing a bit of resemblance of this film to ‘Motorcycle diaries’ where a couple of friends discover themselves through traveling and one of them turn of to be ‘Che Guevara’. The screenplay is effective. Direction is good for a first timer. He judiciously mixed commercial elements into an artistic story. He tried to stick to morally/ethically correct story and at the same time inserted entertainment in the form of Gaali Seenu character. The Naxalite angle in the climax is a distraction though there is a purpose behind it. For a first timer, it is a good debut for Krish.

GamyamOther departments: Lyrics by Sirivennela stand out in the technical departments. Dialogues by Nagaraju are good (especially funny one-liners written for Gaali Seenu). Music by ES Murthy is average. So is the background music. Cinematography by Hari Anumolu is just OK. Editing is alright. Action sequences by Ram Lakshman are good. Choreography done for Kamalinee performance is good.

GamyamAnalysis: The film starts with an accident and then the flashback episode of the scenes prior through that incidents are narrated using spaced flashback format. The strengths of the film are Allari Naresh and direction. On the flipside, a better technical team (cinematography, music etc) would have contributed a lot to the film. Director Krish should be commended for trying a different film instead of going for routine commercial flick for his debut. On a whole Gamyam is a decent film with a bit of art orientation.

rey..after ready for ram

Ram, who tasted success with Devadas and then proved himself as an actor with his second film Jagadam, is getting ready with his third film Ready. Srinu Vaitla, who delivered continuous family entertainers, is directing this film. Ready is done with production. Post-production is in progress. It is reliably learnt that after Ready, Ram will do Rey.. in the direction of YVS Chowdary, who gave him the first break with Devadas. At present, pre-production work is in progress for this film. Also, it is learnt that a film with ace director B.Gopal is also in planning for Ram. There is no official confirmation on B.Gopal - Ram project yet.

JALSA rocked the boxoffice with 21 crores

Jalsa is rocking the box office. It grossed more than 21 crores in the first week. Every one anticipated that Jalsa would rock but only waited to see the range. As every one spoke on the Jalsa audio release day - if Pawan can give out an average film, it would rock the box office. What if the film is proved hit? Sky is the limit for the records. That is what is happening now. Producer Allu Aravind is very happy that they delivered yet another film that is proving the stamina of Telugu film industry. Talking about the same, Allu Aravind said, 'We know the film is coming out great and we wanted to take the range of the film to a different level; the release of the film is planned that way. 1.17 Crore audience saw the film and it collected a gross of 21 crores in first week. I would say that the film proved the stamina of the Telugu film industry rather than saying that my film created records. The same feel is going even overseas. It released with 45 prints in overseas and is creating all new records. There is a Boxoffice analysis community known as Boxoffice Mojo. They provide ratings to the films based on the box office stamina. For the first time, they listed a Telugu movie in their ratings. And I am very proud that it happened to be Jalsa. It got 9th Place in the ratings'. Earlier Tamil version of Sivaji got rating in the Mojo and it stood at 15th place.
